KAI HOʻOULU LLC
Ocean law and policy for indigenous and island peoples
Who We Are
Welcome to Kai Hoʻoulu!
We seek to help develop collaborative solutions with indigenous and island communities.
Communities should be empowered to apply their knowledge and be respected parties in solution building, rather than potentially being at odds with policies, rules and laws that are created without them or their values. Therefore, we strive to seek and apply indigenous and island values and knowledge to navigating legal issues for those who seek to honor and care for their resources, particularly in ocean and coastal regions.
Our Approach:
Ensuring Key Voices Are Honored
Current social and environmental crises most appropriately can be addressed by including the people most impacted, who often hold knowledge that assists in creating successful short- and long-term solutions. Because of insincere or lack of consultation with these communities, they may feel ignored and excluded in decision-making that affects them. Equally, the science that guides policy and law development often lacks verifiable indigenous and island knowledge, which embodies much older baselines of data collection and application. By directly including affected and experienced people in the processes of policy and legal drafting and implementation, we can create better outcomes and bridge mutual distrust.
With our passion and evolving skills, experience and network in this area of work, we aim to navigate legal and policy issues through a grounding in island and indigenous values. We will support the respectful development and advancement of collaborative solutions to ocean, coastal and environmental issues.
